How Stripe fees work
Stripe charges a percentage of each successful payment plus a fixed fee. There's no monthly or setup fee on standard pricing. For a US business, the main rates are:
- Online card payments: 2.9% + 30¢
- Manually entered cards: 3.4% + 30¢
- In person with Stripe Terminal: 2.7% + 5¢
- ACH Direct Debit: 0.8%, capped at $5.00
- Cards issued outside the US: add 1.5%
- Currency conversion: add 1%
Stripe fee = amount × 2.9% + $0.30
On a $100 online card payment, Stripe keeps $3.20 and you receive $96.80. If the customer's card is from another country and needs converting to dollars, the rate rises to 5.4% + 30¢, so the same $100 costs $5.70.
How to receive an exact amount
To end up with a set amount after fees, divide the target plus the fixed fee by one minus the rate. To receive $100 from an online card, charge ($100 + $0.30) ÷ 0.971 = $103.30. Pick “Receive this” in the calculator to do this for you.
Ways to pay less
For large invoices, ACH Direct Debit is far cheaper because its fee stops at $5. On a $2,000 invoice that's $5 instead of $58.30 by card. Businesses processing large volumes can also ask Stripe for custom pricing.
