Square fee calculator
Work out Square's fee on a tap, an online order or a keyed-in card, and see what you keep. Compare with Stripe and PayPal on the same amount.
Standard published US rates as of October 2026. Volume or negotiated pricing will be lower. Check the provider's own pricing page before relying on a number.
How Square fees work
Square charges a flat rate per payment that depends on how the card is taken. On the Square Free plan in the US:
- In person (tap, dip or swipe): 2.6% + 15¢
- Online store or invoice: 3.3% + 30¢
- Keyed in or card on file: 3.5% + 15¢
Square in-person fee = amount × 2.6% + $0.15
On a $100 in-person sale, Square keeps $2.75 and you receive $97.25. The same sale online costs $3.60.
Square's online rate went up
Square raised its Free plan online and invoice rate to 3.3% + 30¢ in early 2026. Older guides still quote 2.9% + 30¢, which now applies only to the paid Plus and Premium plans. If most of your sales are online, compare the cost of those plans against the extra 0.4% you pay on Free.
When Square makes sense
Square is built around in-person selling, with free point-of-sale software and low card-present rates. Businesses that sell mainly online usually pay less with Stripe.
